Dating back to the 5th century and built during the reign of King Kasyapa, the fortress was also known as the ´Lion Rock´ due to the massive lion structure that is believed to have been constructed at its entrance. For over 18 years it served as a royal citadel and features unique water gardens, ornate rock frescoes known as the ´Sigiriya maidens´ and a special Mirror Wall with ancient verses etched onto it. Those reaching the summit can look forward to not only seeing ruins of the palace but also some truly breathtaking panoramas. Proceed to Kandy – visit a spice garden and a batik factory on the way.

*Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – located within the royal palace complex, this historic temple is one of the island´s most sacred sites, especially amongst Buddhist devotees. Locally referred to as the ´Sri Dalada Maligawa´, the temple is home to what is believed to be a tooth relic of Lord Buddha and is the focal point of the annual festival known as the Kandy Esala Perahera.
