Mirissa Water Sports Centre Location Mirissa Water Sports Center is based in Mirissa harbour, a beautiful and quiet fishing village in the South of Sri Lanka. Mirissa is reported to have the prettiest beach on the South coast with clean sand, calm water and safe swimming. It is 40 minutes away from Galle on the southern tip of the island. Mirissa Water Sports is located on the Eastern side of Weligama bay, one of the most beautiful bays in Sri Lanka, famous for its white sand and the coconut palms which fringe the beach. The bay is protected by natural coral reef which makes it excellent for snorkeling, diving and sailing. Many surfers come to the bay as there are some exciting surfing spots in this area. Based in Mirissa Harbour MWS provides sport fishing, sailing, Coastal Cruises, Snorkeling & boating activities. Mirissa Water sports is an spin off of the building a future Foundation, a Charitable trust set up to bring new ideas , Technology & Training which will generate employment for the youth from the Tsunami effected coastal areas. Sports Fishing The continental shelf drop off lies less than 8 miles off the coast of Mirissa where tuna, sailfish, marlin, wahoo and other large game fish can be found.This is still virgin territory as sports fishing has yet to be discovered in Sri Lanka. Our boat, The Spirit of Dondra is a 54 foot Indonesian fishing trawler, fully equipped and adapted for sports fishing including modern satellite navigation, fish finding equipment and a toilet. Ideal timing for sports fishing is mornings from 7am-1pm and afternoons from 2 to 6 pm. Minimum hire time is 5 hours. Maximum 4 people Coastal Cruises The Spirit of Dondra can also be hired for cruises around the coast, stopping at bays for swimming, snorkeling & picnics or just sight-seeing. The area around Mirissa is noted for its wonderfully un-spoilt coconut fringed beaches and coves. Dolphin watching can be arranged during the season. Minimum hire time is 2 hours. Maximum 10 people Bay Sailing Weligama Bay provides a beautiful sailing ground with a 5 km stretch of sea protected by a reef. Our 24 foot sailing boat is a classic gaff-rigged Maldivian dhoni ideally suited to bay sailing. The boat is manned by a crew of two who are fully trained and know the bay well. For those interested in discovering the marine life below, snorkeling equipment is available. Minimum hire time is 1 hour, although the boat can be hired for a full day to explore the bay or for a sunset sail at dusk. Maximum 4 people River trips The Polwatta Ganga is an exceptionally peaceful river, famous for its coconuts and birdlife. Hereyou regularly see egrets, bee-eaters, fish eagles, parakeets and black capped oriels. We also often find the purple faced leaf monkey as well as monitor lizards and crocodiles basking on the banks. We offer boat trips up the river, both for keen bird watchers and sightseers, with trained crew. Best times for bird watching is dawn (6.30 - 8.30 am) and dusk (4.30 - 6.30 pm). Minimum hire time2 hours. Maximum 6 people Sea Kayaking Available for hire to explore the shoreline of the bay whether alone or with a friend. A sporty way to enjoy the scenery and to get close to the Indian Ocean! Maximum 2 people
